Is it anything to do with children ?
Balloon fetishism is normally an adult activity - it does not normally impact
on other sexual preferences of the individual concerned. In other
words it is normally an additional facet of an individual's basic sexuality - not
a replacement for it - balloon fetishists are quite representative of people
in general.
By the same token, since there are a few pedophiles amongst the population there
will undoubtedly be some pedophiles who also have a balloon fetish. Amongst
the internet discussion groups for balloon fetishists there is an effective
'self policing' which defends their rights to exist in a pedophile-free
environment, and vigorously opposes the very hint of any
untoward activity.
Amongst 'normal' people there are those who have never heard of balloon fetishism
and, because they see balloons as just a childhood toy, make the assumption that
it must be something to do with children. This is just one of the reasons why
balloon fetishists normally keep their 'extra' sexual interests very secret
indeed - life is very much easier that way.
Another reason for secrecy is the simple suspicion of what other people might
think. This is particularly so for fetishists who have not found out that there
are other people just like them with similar feelings for balloons - invariably
they feel, at some time or other, that they are the only ones who have these
feelings. This in itself is a barrier to discussion and therefore a barrier
to the discovery that others have the fetish and that it is not so unusual
after all.
