Relationship between fear and the fetish
There is a great deal of similarity between the feeling of excitement and the
feeling of fear - the heart rate quickens - we may sweat a little - and our
attention is normally centered on just one thing - the thing that is causing the
excitement or fear... or indeed both at the same time. So how can we tell the
difference. There are circumstances where it is obvious - we are likely to have
fear of something that is clearly dangerous, and we will be excited in pleasurable
situations.
But there are a whole load of different situations where there are elements of
fear AND excitement - in fact we sometimes go out of our way to experience both
at the same time - fairground rides - motor sport - bungee jumping, and it is
because we are very bad at telling the difference between fear and excitement
in these situations that means we can label them how we want to - scary or fun
or a mixture of the two - it is our attitude to the situation which mainly
determines what the label will be.
So how does this apply to balloons ? Balloons are quite unique objects and so can
be fascinating - a normal 'toyshop' balloon will start out a couple of inches
across but when you blow air in it will expand to a foot or so - nothing else on
the planet does that - and they have a nice feel to them - they can be squishy
and soft and so feel like skin - practically any part of the body you care to name
- they can be batted around and played with in all manner of ways. You can decorate
a room with bunches of them and they will add bright color and a pleasant form to
make a pretty display. You can do battle with them and hit your 'enemy' with them
without any fear of injury. They are light and airy, pretty and captivating and
EXCITING but... there's always the FEAR that one will explode. Even those who are
not phobic about balloons bursting are likely to jump when
that happens - and if there is
a balloon you really like for whatever reason - there's the FEAR of losing this
fascinating but fragile object.
So how can all this kids' stuff impact on our adult lives ? There are many theories
but there is one thing that is certain - very early experiences can have a dramatic
effect - though there is little definitive data on the subject, the 'Early
